Understanding ASTM Grades (The "N" Series)

For industrial rubber and plastic applications, Carbon Black is categorized by the ASTM numbering system. Choosing the right grade is critical for final product performance.

1. Hard Carbon Blacks (N200 & N300 Series)

These grades feature fine particle sizes and offer high reinforcement.

  • N220 (ISAF): Provides extremely high abrasion resistance and tensile strength. Used in passenger car tire treads and conveyor belts.
  • N330 (HAF): The most widely used grade. It offers a balanced combination of abrasion resistance and hysteresis. Ideal for tire treads, sidewalls, and solid tires.

2. Soft Carbon Blacks (N500, N600, N700 Series)

These grades have larger particle sizes, offering easier dispersion and processing.

  • N550 (FEF): Known for excellent dimensional stability and smooth extrusion surfaces. Used in tire carcasses, tubes, and extruded profiles.
  • N660 (GPF): A general-purpose grade with high elasticity and low heat buildup. Common in hoses, sealing rings, and cable jacketing.
